This post has been a long time coming. I wasn’t sure how I wanted to word it but I figured if my title was clever enough it would come to me. Over the years I have had many friends and acquaintances comment on how well I do my make up while tearing down other heavy girls that they knew. I’m here to tell you that your fat friend is not the patron saint for fat girls.
A few years ago I remember standing in my boss’s office talking about some revenue strategies. I happened to be talking about an outfit that I was excited to wear to a community mixer when she interrupted me. She mentioned that I dress so nicely and that I was proof that you can be heavy and still be stylish. That happened almost five years ago and it has stuck me ever since.
Through the years I’ve heard all the comments you can think of pertaining to myself or other overweight girls. Even when I was not fat, I remember hearing people tell some of my fellow classmates that they had a pretty face for a big girl. What I need to know is how you can consciously say that to someone? That comment makes someone feel like a consolation prize. That is the equivalent of saying well you’re lucky that you look semi attractive on at least one part of your body. Ladies, I’m hear to tell you right now that is a big fat lie.
Plus size individuals get judged on everything! Our appearances always ripe for critique according to public opinion and so is what we put in our body. I know other girls who are scared to death to eat in public for fear of being judged. You know, do you see that fat girl over eating a burger and fries? Has she ever eaten a salad? What you don’t know is that girl has been killing at the gym 5 days a week and wanted to treat herself this month for hitting a personal fitness girl. Better yet, look at that fat girl eating that fruit cup! She’s probably just doing that so she doesn’t look like a total fat ass in public. What you don’t know if that girl has PCOS and eats a very healthy plant based lifestyle.
There is not a single standard of beauty that provides blanket coverage for all women. I’ve seen a lot of “skinny” women who don’t “dress so nicely.” It doesn’t matter if you are 80 lbs or 600 lbs, everyone has the ability to look like a slob. Even though we live in an age where plus size ladies have more clothing options than ever, it still isn’t equal. A lot of plus size models tend to have thicker thighs and hips versus carrying most of their weigh in their stomach. It isn’t perfect but it is getting better.
Your fat friend is not the standard to hold all fat girls to. Your red headed friend does not represent all gingers. You don’t know what makes up a human being and your aesthetic report card doesn’t mean a damn thing. I hope you remember this article and give a high five to the next fat girl you see killing it at life!
