Happy Sunday Everyone!
It is hard to believe that we are about halfway through February. Granted it is a short month, it is still hard to believe. Today’s Sunday Funday topic is going to be on snorkeling. As many of you have noticed, I tend to bring my own snorkel gear whenever I cruise. To some it may look like extra packing that I don’t need to do. By the end of this post you will see why I make that decision for myself!
- I typically do not participate in a scheduled excursions. I kind of like going off the grid and seeing what I can find. A great example of this is my Grand Cayman post/video: https://haleewithaflair.com/2016/02/grand-cayman-rum-pointstarfish-point/
- I’m comfortable with my equipment. I usually take my equipment to my hotel or the YMCA and test it a few times before I pack it. This way I am confident with what I’m taking with me. Swimming a few weeks prior to some snorkeling is a good idea to build up endurance. I do this to work on my breathing endurance for free diving since I’m normally traveling in the winter.
- I don’t like sharing. Even on a scheduled excursion like Barbados where snorkel equipment was offered, I bring my own equipment. I know they sanitize the equipment but I still get personally skeeved out thinking about whose mouth those snorkels have been in LOL.
- You always have something to do. When all else fails, I usually end up at a beach. Yes I may not see a shipwreck or coral but chances are you are bound to see something so that makes it worthwhile for me!
You need to keep in mind that if you want to freelance and snorkel that there are risks that you need to be aware of. Be aware and honest with your actual swimming ability. If you don’t swim very often, you shouldn’t be going 20 yards out from shore. If you don’t have good visibility in shallow conditions due to currents, do not venture out further. Keep in mind you are sharing the ocean with boats and jetskis as well so you need to be aware of your surroundings.
I will include some links to the equipment that I use below. This is not sponsored, this is just the equipment that I happen to like and enjoy. As usual, if you guys have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Totally agree. We live in Hawaii and even when we aren’t planning to go snorkeling or even to the beach…we always have the snorkel gear in the back of the Xterra. You never know when you’ll get the itch to snorkel or if you’ll see a trending spot on Twitter or Facebook with dolphins, etc.

Oh absolutely! I’m hoping to upgrade to a GoPro Hero 4 so I can periscope the Christ of the Abyss snorkel excursion that I’m doing in April. I could snorkel all day! So many options! Thank you for stopping by!
