Best Christmas Markets in Europe Ranked: My Honest Review After Visiting 10 Destinations
If you’re trying to decide which Christmas markets to visit in Europe, you’re not alone. Every year, travelers ask the same question: Which Christmas market is the best?
After visiting Christmas markets across France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, and England, I’ve discovered that no two Christmas market destinations are exactly alike. Some feel like stepping into a fairytale, while others stand out because of their food, atmosphere, history, or sheer number of markets.
My first Christmas market trip was based in Frankfurt, Germany. From there, I used Germany’s excellent rail network to take day trips to Strasbourg, Cologne, and Heidelberg. It was the perfect introduction to Europe’s Christmas market culture and completely changed how I viewed holiday travel. Since then, I’ve returned to Europe during the Christmas season multiple times and have now visited 10 of Europe’s most popular Christmas market destinations.
This ranking is based on my personal experiences, overall atmosphere, decorations, food, crowd levels, and whether I’d recommend the destination to a first-time Christmas market traveler. I have full vlogs of these on my YouTube channel too!

1. Strasbourg, France
If I could only recommend one Christmas market destination in Europe, it would be Strasbourg.
Known as the “Capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg is home to one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, dating back to 1570. The city takes Christmas seriously. Every street, square, and half-timbered building seems to be decorated to perfection.
What sets Strasbourg apart is that the Christmas spirit extends far beyond the market stalls. The entire city feels like a holiday movie set. Walking through the historic center after dark, surrounded by lights and decorations, feels almost surreal.
Why it ranks #1:
- Known as the Capital of Christmas
- One of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe
- Incredible decorations throughout the entire city
- Fairytale atmosphere unlike anywhere else
- Multiple market areas to explore

2. Cologne, Germany
Cologne offers one of the most complete Christmas market experiences in Europe.
Many visitors only know about the famous Cathedral Market, but Cologne actually has seven official Christmas markets, each with a completely different theme and atmosphere.
The Cathedral Market is spectacular, with the towering cathedral serving as one of the most impressive backdrops you’ll find anywhere in Europe. My personal favorite, however, is the Angel Market. The illuminated angel decorations overhead create a magical atmosphere, and the hot gin cider remains one of my favorite Christmas market drinks I’ve ever had.
Why it ranks #2:
- Seven unique Christmas markets
- Stunning cathedral backdrop
- Excellent food and drink options
- Easy to visit multiple markets in one trip
- Home to my favorite Christmas market beverage

3. Vienna, Austria
Vienna feels like the Christmas market destination that inspired all the others.
Elegant architecture, grand boulevards, horse-drawn carriages, and beautiful holiday decorations create a classic European Christmas atmosphere. The Rathausplatz Christmas Market, located in front of Vienna’s City Hall, is one of the most iconic Christmas markets in Europe.
Everything about Vienna during the holidays feels timeless and elegant.
Why it ranks #3:
- Beautiful historic setting
- Classic Christmas atmosphere
- Stunning Rathausplatz market
- Excellent Austrian holiday foods
- One of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas destinations

4. Bruges, Belgium
Bruges is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited, and Christmas only enhances its charm.
The medieval architecture, canals, and cobblestone streets create an incredible backdrop for the holiday season. One of my favorite things about Bruges is that the festive atmosphere isn’t limited to the official market areas. Shops, restaurants, and hotels throughout the city decorate extensively.
The biggest challenge is the crowds. Bruges is popular year-round, and Christmas only amplifies that popularity.
Why it ranks #4:
- Stunning medieval architecture
- Beautiful holiday decorations throughout the city
- Incredible atmosphere
- Excellent Belgian food and hot chocolate
- Feels like stepping into a storybook

5. Paris, France
Paris is magical at Christmas.
The decorated department stores, festive window displays, illuminated streets, and holiday markets create an atmosphere that feels uniquely Parisian. The city itself is one of the biggest attractions during the Christmas season.
Paris also offers some of the best food options I’ve encountered at Christmas markets. The reason it lands in the middle of my rankings is that some of the markets feel larger and more commercialized than the intimate markets you’ll find in Strasbourg or Germany.
Why it ranks #5:
- Outstanding food selection
- Gorgeous holiday decorations
- Incredible city atmosphere
- Iconic Paris landmarks dressed for Christmas
- Perfect for combining Christmas markets with sightseeing

6. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest may not get as much Christmas market attention as some other European cities, but it absolutely deserves consideration.
The city is beautiful, affordable, and home to some of the friendliest people I’ve encountered during my travels. While the markets themselves don’t quite reach the level of Strasbourg or Cologne, the overall experience is excellent.
Budapest remains one of my favorite cities in Europe regardless of season.
Why it ranks #6:
- Friendly atmosphere
- Beautiful setting
- Great value
- Excellent local food
- Fantastic overall destination

7. Heidelberg, Germany
Heidelberg feels like a fairytale brought to life.
Its historic old town, castle views, and charming market squares create a wonderful Christmas atmosphere. The only reason Heidelberg ranks lower is size. Compared to larger destinations like Cologne or Strasbourg, the Christmas markets here are relatively small.
That said, it’s still one of my favorite German Christmas market destinations.
Why it ranks #7:
- Fairytale setting
- Historic old town
- Easy to explore
- Beautiful Christmas atmosphere

8. Brussels, Belgium
Brussels delivers a strong Christmas market experience, particularly around the Grand Place.
The light displays and holiday atmosphere around the city’s famous square are breathtaking. However, the Christmas market areas are spread throughout the city, making the experience feel less concentrated than some of the higher-ranked destinations.
Why it ranks #8:
- Beautiful Grand Place
- Excellent food options
- Impressive holiday displays
- Large Christmas event footprint

9. Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt was my introduction to Christmas markets, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
The market itself is beautiful and worth visiting, but compared to destinations like Heidelberg, Cologne, and Strasbourg, it lacks some of the historic charm many travelers seek. Much of Frankfurt was rebuilt after World War II, which gives it a different feel than many of Germany’s older cities.
However, Frankfurt remains one of the best Christmas market hubs in Europe because of its excellent transportation connections.
Why it ranks #9:
- Excellent transportation hub
- Beautiful market square
- Easy access to nearby destinations
- Great first-time Christmas market base

10. London, England
London at Christmas is spectacular.
The city’s Christmas lights, decorations, and festive shopping districts are among the best I’ve seen anywhere in the world. Covent Garden, Regent Street, Oxford Street, and the surrounding neighborhoods look incredible during the holiday season.
The markets themselves, however, felt more commercialized than the traditional Christmas markets found throughout continental Europe.
Why it ranks #10:
- Incredible Christmas lights
- Fantastic holiday shopping
- Beautiful citywide decorations
- Great Christmas atmosphere beyond the markets
My Best European Christmas Market Tips
1. Bring Cash for Public Restrooms
Many public restrooms throughout Europe still charge a small fee. While cards are becoming more common, having a few euros on hand can save you from an uncomfortable situation.
2. Pack a Foldable Tote Bag
Trust me—you’ll buy more than you expect.
Whether it’s ornaments, handmade gifts, Christmas decorations, or edible treats to bring home, a lightweight tote bag will quickly become one of the most useful things you pack.
3. Keep the Christmas Market Mugs
One of my favorite Christmas market souvenirs costs almost nothing.
When you order mulled wine, hot cider, hot chocolate, or other seasonal drinks, you’ll often pay a small mug deposit. This deposit varies by market and destination, but it’s usually just a few euros.
You can return the mug and get your deposit back, or keep it as a souvenir. Many markets create unique designs that change every year, making them fun and affordable collectibles.
I always bring several home.

4. Go Hungry
Christmas markets are as much about food as they are shopping.
One of my favorite things about visiting multiple markets is seeing how the food changes from region to region. German markets offer bratwurst and potato pancakes. France brings regional specialties and pastries. Belgium offers waffles and chocolate. Austria serves traditional holiday treats, while Hungary has unique local dishes you won’t find elsewhere.
Plan to snack your way through the day.

5. Visit During the Day and Again at Night
Many travelers only experience Christmas markets after dark.
While the lights are undeniably magical at night, daytime visits offer a completely different perspective. Crowds are often smaller, photos are easier to take, and you’ll get a better appreciation for the architecture and decorations.
Whenever possible, visit the market twice—once during the day and once after sunset.

Should You Visit Christmas Markets by River Cruise or Land Vacation?
One of the questions I get asked most often is whether it’s better to experience Christmas markets by river cruise or on a traditional land-based itinerary.
The truth is that both can be fantastic options.
My first Christmas market trip was a land-based vacation centered around Frankfurt. Using Germany’s rail network, I explored Strasbourg, Cologne, and Heidelberg on day trips. It was affordable, easy to navigate, and gave me the flexibility to spend as much time as I wanted in each destination.
For travelers who want to visit multiple Christmas markets without constantly changing hotels, a Christmas market river cruise is hard to beat.
River cruise lines like Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, and Uniworld offer itineraries that visit some of Europe’s most iconic Christmas market destinations, including Strasbourg, Cologne, Vienna, Budapest, and more. You unpack once, enjoy included excursions, and wake up in a new festive destination almost every day.
There isn’t a wrong choice—it simply depends on your travel style.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning your first European Christmas market trip, Strasbourg, Cologne, and Vienna would be my top recommendations. Together, they represent everything travelers imagine when they dream about European Christmas markets: festive lights, historic architecture, incredible food, holiday traditions, and unforgettable atmosphere.
But the truth is that every destination on this list offers something special. Whether you’re wandering through the fairytale streets of Bruges, sipping mulled wine beneath Cologne Cathedral, or watching holiday lights sparkle across Paris, you’ll quickly understand why Christmas markets have become one of my favorite ways to experience Europe.
